The Perfect TV Mounting Height — Complete Guide

📍 Denver, Colorado⏱ 5 min readUpdated April 2026

One of the most common questions we get from Denver homeowners before a TV mounting appointment is: "How high should my TV be mounted?" It's a great question — and one that doesn't have a single universal answer. The right height depends on your room, your furniture, your TV size, and how you watch.

This guide breaks it all down so you can make the right call before we arrive — or let us advise you on-site.

The General Rule: Eye Level When Seated

The standard recommendation from display manufacturers and ergonomics experts is to mount your TV so the center of the screen is at eye level when you're seated. For most adults sitting on a standard sofa, that's approximately 42 inches from the floor to the center of the TV.

This means if you have a 55" TV (which is about 28" tall), the bottom of the TV would be roughly 28 inches from the floor — about knee height when standing. That can look and feel low to some homeowners, but it's genuinely more comfortable for extended viewing.

Room-By-Room Height Recommendations

Living Room

In a living room with a standard sofa and coffee table setup, aim for the center of the TV at 42-48 inches from the floor. If you have very low furniture or tend to recline, go toward the lower end. If you have higher furniture or an open floor plan where people sometimes watch standing up, 48-54 inches gives you more flexibility.

Bedroom

Bedroom TV mounting is different because you're often watching from bed, reclining or lying down. Mount the TV higher than you would in a living room — typically 50-60 inches to the center, angled downward slightly with a tilt mount. This puts it in your natural line of sight when lying back on pillows.

Above a Fireplace

Above-fireplace mounts are the exception to the eye-level rule — the fireplace forces the TV higher than ideal. In most Denver homes, this puts the TV center at 60-72 inches from the floor. To compensate, we always recommend a tilting mount that lets you angle the screen downward 5-15 degrees toward your seating position. This makes a significant difference in viewing comfort.

Kitchen or Dining Area

Kitchen TVs are typically watched from a standing or bar-stool height position. Mount the center at 54-65 inches — higher than a standard living room setup since you're often standing or on a raised stool.

How TV Size Affects Mounting Height

Larger TVs should generally be mounted slightly lower because they have more screen real estate above and below center. Here's a quick reference:
